The Hôtel & Spa Régent Petite France stands on the banks of the Ill, in Strasbourg’s most photographed district. The building dates back to the 17th century. Ice blocks were once produced here for the entire region, until the icehouse closed in 1989. Three years later, the site reopened as a five-star hotel, without losing the trace of its industrial past.

As soon as you walk through the door, the first thing that strikes you is the view. Almost all the rooms overlook the water or the half-timbered houses that made the district famous. There are 75 of them, spread across seven categories, from the 26 m² Classic room to the Louise Suite and its 89 m². The most compact remain understated for a five-star hotel, but they make up for it in the details: custom-designed Alsatian marquetry, a marble bathroom with double vanity, and in some cases, a balcony suspended above the canal.

Mornings often begin with breakfast served in the room, or at the buffet in the dining room, with organic and local products, and a gluten-free option on request. You can also wait until evening to sample the cuisine at Le Pont Tournant restaurant, whose terrace runs along the canal and watches barges pass under the bridge that gave the house its name.

In the basement, the Ô Fil de l'eau wellness area plays on the same waters as the hotel. Sauna, hammam, outdoor whirlpool bath, salt grotto, ice fountain. You can spend the afternoon there without seeing daylight again, or simply treat yourself to a fifty-minute massage before heading back up.

At the end of the day, the Bar Champagne opens onto a menu of more than twenty labels and a few simple plates, tartare, club sandwich, Caesar salad. The atmosphere is hushed, more suited to intimate conversations.

On the practical side, the hotel is a five-minute walk from the TGV station and ten minutes from the cathedral. Valet parking and parking are available, but spaces are limited (35, with three electric charging points available by reservation), and as the street is pedestrianized, it is best to notify reception in advance to obtain the access code. A slight detour that has its upside: no cars pass under the windows.

Pets are welcome, and families benefit from free stays for three children under twelve.

One final tip: ask for a room on the lock side. The bridge opens several times a day to let tourist boats through, and seeing it from your bed when you wake up is well worth the extra few minutes it may take to get it at booking.
