The Gutenberg Hotel looks straight into Strasbourg Cathedral’s eyes, or almost. From some rooms, the view stops abruptly at the stone lacework of the south portal. Push open the door on the ground floor and the tone is set: clean lines, touches of primary red, a subtle nod to the printing characters that gave the house its name.

The 42 rooms are divided into five categories. Under the eaves, some attic rooms play the duplex card, with the bathroom upstairs, sometimes at the end of a small internal staircase you have to climb to brush your teeth. The trade-off is a view that drops straight onto the glazed-tile roofs and, from the highest ones, onto the cathedral itself. Elsewhere, the volumes are more classic. The walk-in shower is standard, the safe is large enough for a laptop to fit comfortably, and a Nespresso machine sits on the desk.

Morning begins with a buffet made with regional producers: breads and pastries from Thierry Schwartz, jams from Climont, yogurts from the Laiterie du Climont. However carefully prepared it may be, this breakfast costs extra and is not included in the room rate. A detail to factor into the budget before arriving.

On leaving, Petite France is just a few minutes away on foot, with its half-timbered houses leaning over the water. Reception operates day and night, ready to recommend an Alsatian restaurant or book a boat tour on the Ill.

As for parking, there is no private garage here. Reception generally points guests toward the Austerlitz parking lot, a few minutes’ walk away, convenient and without prior reservation.

In the evening, the square calms down once the tourist groups have left, and the cathedral glows softly. One last tip: book early in December, as the cathedral-facing rooms go first during the Christmas market.
