Hôtel des Tonneliers. The name comes from the old trade that once gave character to this pedestrian alley in the Grande Île, just a few minutes’ walk from Strasbourg Cathedral. It is slowly climbed, between half-timbered façades and winstub shop windows. No cars venture in.

Once through the door, the welcome is straightforward. Someone comes down to get the luggage. Coffee is offered, and sometimes a kettle for the room, if requested. On the phone, before arrival, the tone is already the same: direct, warm, without stock phrases.

The rooms, about fifteen spread over several floors, focus on simplicity: carefully chosen furnishings, adjustable air conditioning, and a coffee machine that comes in handy on rushed mornings. Facing the courtyard, the silence is almost total, with the shutters drawn down as soon as night falls, a fairly rare luxury in this type of establishment. Facing the street, however, the activity in the pedestrian lane picks up a little in the evening, especially on weekends. Light sleepers would do well to mention this when booking, so they can be placed at the back of the building.

One thing to know before climbing the stairs: the building, as old as the street itself, does not have an elevator. You go up on foot. This is usually no problem, but those traveling with a large suitcase or who prefer to avoid stairs should mention it when booking; a lower-floor room often becomes available without difficulty. The staff, if informed, are happy to help carry the luggage.

On the ground floor, the restaurant La Cruche d'Or serves breakfast as a generous buffet, with the option of sitting out on the terrace as soon as the weather turns nice. In the evening, the winstub takes over: tarte flambée, sauerkraut, and other hearty Alsatian dishes, served in a wood-paneled setting.

Outside, the cathedral can be reached in less than five minutes. Petite France, with its half-timbered houses leaning over the Ill, is not much farther. The Vauban Dam, a little more off the beaten path, offers one of the clearest views over the city’s rooftops.

One last tip: to dine at La Cruche d'Or on a Saturday evening, it is best to book your table early in the morning. Local regulars settle in there early.
