The Cour du Corbeau is discovered almost by chance, just off the Quai des Bateliers in Strasbourg, where the Ill still traces the contours of the old city. A carriage gateway, a cobbled courtyard that clatters under suitcase wheels, and you realize you’ve changed centuries in just a few meters.

The place dates back to 1528. A former coaching inn, ten buildings connected over the centuries, that has seen Mozart, Emperor Joseph II, and Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, pass through. You push open the door and the lobby opens onto two courtyards at once, original terracotta tiles, stone, a sofa where you could wait for a long time. By car, it is best to let the hotel guide you: the pedestrian streets and one-way roads of the historic center leave little room for improvisation.

The 63 rooms and suites are all different. Room 214 is tucked under the eaves, room 302 lets you see its bathroom from the bed through a partition of exposed beams. Elsewhere, a wooden balcony runs along the inner courtyard, wide enough to set down a coffee in the morning. The furnishings remain in a revisited Louis XV style, understated, more faithful to the spirit of the place than to current trends.

On the ground floor, in the former stables of the coaching inn, the breakfast room comes alive from morning. You’ll find kougelhopf and the day’s pretzels, mirabelle plum jam that makes you want another helping, and a regional cheese placed simply on the buffet. A gluten-free menu is also available. In fine weather, everything continues in the courtyard, on the terrace, from nine o’clock onward.

The hotel does not have a restaurant as such. Meals arrive on a tray, delivered by the team from partner addresses in the neighborhood, Alsatian cuisine, bistro fare, or Italian flavors depending on the mood of the moment. Room service remains available at any hour, with a shorter menu.

In the evening, the bar leans into wood and leather, with aubergine velvet banquettes and chandeliers that recall the Baroque without ever slipping into pastiche. The cocktails are rather inventive, the service discreet.

Outside, everything is within walking distance. The cathedral is five minutes away, the Alsatian Museum right across the street, Petite France on the other side of the Ill. Enough to fill an entire day without ever getting back in the car.

A tip: arrive early for breakfast on the terrace, before the courtyard fills up and the best tables in the sun are taken.
