The ibis Strasbourg Centre Gare faces the TGV station, barely fifty meters from the platforms. You get off the train, cross the square, and the reception already opens onto the city.

On the ground floor, the lobby keeps the calm that belongs to addresses living to the rhythm of trains. Someone leaves a suitcase at the luggage storage, another settles at the computer station to print a boarding pass. Reception never closes, which matters to anyone arriving at midnight or leaving at dawn.

As you go up the floors, the one hundred and seventeen rooms all follow the same principle: adjustable air conditioning, good soundproofing, shower or bathtub depending on the layout. You quickly recognize the ibis touch, sober tones, furniture designed to last rather than to photograph well. It is the kind of room where you know exactly what you will find when you open the door, which, after a day of trains or meetings, is no small comfort. Some, higher up in the building, frame the cathedral spire or the rooftops of the Grande Île, a quick glance before closing the curtains.

As for bedding, the standard room offers a double bed, while the superior room adds a sofa bed and a few extra square meters (25 m² advertised), enough for a lightly traveling family. Rooms for guests with reduced mobility are also available, designed for moving around without contortions.

Breakfast is served in the dining room, an all-you-can-eat buffet with eggs, fruit salad, yogurts, fruit juices, and pastries fresh from the oven on site, madeleines included. There is an extra charge to enjoy it, which is still standard for the category, but it is worth knowing before booking. For early risers or late sleepers, a lighter option starts as early as four in the morning, timed to the station just across the way.

Throughout the day, the veranda bar remains the hotel’s fixed point. Open 24/7, it serves drinks, regional wines, and pizzas, in a light that changes with the hours, bright in the morning, more subdued after seven in the evening. You can stop there for an hour before a train, or linger after a stroll through Petite France.

Outside, the city begins very nearby. Ten minutes on foot are enough to reach Notre-Dame Cathedral or the half-timbered lanes of Petite France, a little more for the major museums in the center. Three tram lines leave from just steps from the hotel and go straight to the European institutions district or the Palais de la Musique et des Congrès. In winter, the Christmas market sets up in the same streets. There is no private on-site parking, however: a paid public parking lot (Indigo Wodli) takes over a few meters away, a solution that soon proves useful since the tram and walking already cover most trips in the city center.

Bikes can also be rented directly at the front desk, handy for following the Ill early in the morning, when the quays are still empty.

One last tip: at the end of the day, settle at the bar on the veranda side rather than at the back of the room; the low evening light on the windows around seven o’clock is worth the stop.
