La Célestine is housed in a nineteenth-century family home, just a stone’s throw from the banks of the Ill, in the Krutenau district, which once saw boatmen pass through before welcoming a tobacco factory and then the School of Decorative Arts. Only five rooms, each named after something that tells a part of this story: D'Kammer, La Dunette, La Ripoline, La Manufacture, La Vespa.

Fabienne and Claude live here. You meet them first thing in the morning around the breakfast table, where gingerbread and damson plum jam are passed from hand to hand between two sightseeing tips. Claude, a native of Grande Île, knows the shortcuts that guidebooks never mention. Fabienne, who came from elsewhere and stayed for love of Alsace, is more likely to point you toward a discreet winstub or a newly opened exhibition.

Upstairs, each room retains the imprint of a different era in the neighborhood. The house has five rooms and operates without 24-hour reception staff: it is best to let them know your arrival time before showing up. On the practical side, the house offers free bicycle parking, which is ideal since the neighborhood is best explored on foot or by bike. For a car, you will need to rely on a paid public parking lot, two hundred and fifty meters away. Given the proximity of the cathedral (750 meters), Petite France (one kilometer), and the Universités tram stop, which goes directly to the European Parliament, the car is in any case secondary during your stay.

In December, the Christmas Markets begin just five hundred meters away, on the Bredelemârik side and among the winegrowers of the golden crown. The rest of the year, the banks of the Ill and their barges moored alongside are three hundred meters away, with the Botanical Garden just a little farther on.
