Hôtel Tandem
Hotel-restaurant 4-star in Strasbourg
Presentation
Hotel Tandem is easy to spot as soon as you step out of Strasbourg station, on the square, directly opposite the glass canopy. The façade dates from the late 19th century; it long housed the former Nid de Cigogne before becoming, in 2020, this 4-star boutique hotel with a proudly eco-responsible approach.
Push open the door and the ground floor reads like a covered street. Reception opens onto the bar, then onto a counter, a lounge corner, the dining room, which also serves as a coworking space, and on the right, a small library. A few bricks have been left exposed. Teal blue and powder pink recur in touches, in the fabrics, on a wall, and throughout the bedrooms upstairs.
Seventy rooms are spread over five floors. The headboards tell the story of cycling without shouting about it: patinated leather like an old saddle, a line that recalls a handlebar. The L'Échappée rooms, the most compact, range from 13 to 17 m², comfortable for a solo stopover or a couple travelling light. For more space, for two people or a family, choose a Tandem, a Poursuivants or a Peloton, which go up to 25 m² and include a sofa bed. The windows overlook the U-shaped inner courtyard or Place de la Gare, which is fairly quiet once you close them at night.
On the courtesy tray, a glass bottle of micro-filtered water, organic and fair-trade tea, coffee, a kettle. Under the table, a sorting bin. The bath products, in the bathroom with shower, are organic. When leaving, a little note waits on the hanger: “you are beautiful.” A detail that costs nothing and stays with you. Room 514, all pink with a view of the cathedral, is often mentioned as the favourite of regular guests.
From early morning, the smell of homemade pastries drifts through the corridors. The buffet focuses on local and organic produce: cheeses from the Vogelgesang farm, cereals from the Moulin des Moines, charcuterie from the Fritsch farm, seasonal fruit. Nothing in plastic. For those heading out early, a takeaway breakfast, in a kraft paper bag, waits hanging from the door handle.
On the ground floor, the bar and wine cellar open onto a plant-filled patio, from noon to 11 p.m. It is a place to settle in with a drink at the end of the day, between a local craft beer and a wine list that quietly seeks balance between male and female winemakers. Restaurant service, however, is not guaranteed every evening: the tables do not turn continuously, and depending on the day, it is better to head to Mangatama or Coin des Kneckes, just a stone’s throw away, than to rely solely on the hotel kitchen.
Bicycles are available for hire to reach Petite France or ride along the Ill. A recommended app points out a few addresses along the way. For longer outings, a picnic basket and a blanket can be reserved in advance.
One final tip for those taking an early train: the kraft breakfast bag must be ordered the night before at reception, and it waits patiently on the handle from first light.
